"Indianpreneurship - A Journey Into Business"

Fall Session: Sept. 8 - Nov. 3. Winter Session: Jan. 26 - March 23.

This 8-week comprehensive business development class relies on a story-based curriculum using Native American experiences as a basis to illustrate today's business principles.

It features the unique challenges, experiences and opportunities of Native American entrepreneurs and others in starting, owning and operating their own small business.

The class is offered 3 times a year and meets Monday and Thursday evenings. This class fills up fast, so call now for the next available opening.

The US Treasury Department awarded a grant to The Sequoyah Fund from the National 2007 Native Community Development Financial Institution Fund Program. U.S. Representative Heath Shuler was in Cherokee October 19, 2007 to present the $665,583 grant.

The Sequoyah Fund was honored for work in lending to minority businesses at the 25th Annual Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week awards luncheon held in Asheville, September 2007.

Sequoyah Fund client - Janet Arch of ML&S Construction & Services - received a MED Week award in the construction category.

President Reagan started MED Week in 1982 to encourage nationwide celebrations of the business accomplishments of ethnic minorities.

The Results Are In

To determine how we can best provide services to the community, we conducted a Business Development Survey throughout the Cherokee area.

Survey results indicate there is not only a need for businesses and services on the Qualla Boundary but also enthusiasm for starting new businesses. Results and ideas shared will help us better understand ways to help.

 

 

This summer we are hosting a series of free business classes in partnership with Southwestern Community College. All classes will be held at the Cherokee EMS Building from 6-9 pm. July 7 – Business Start-up Basics. Learn whether you have the right stuff to own and operate a business. Learn how to find a market for your product, how to finance, the 4 major issues every business faces, and how to design a step-by-step plan for success.

July 14 – Writing a Business Plan. Learn the 2 main purposes of a business plan, what lenders want to see and things not to include.

July 21 – Marketing Your Business 4 Success. Determine the best way to develop a strategy for successfully reaching the right market.

July 28 – Pricing for Profits. Workshop to assist in effectively pricing your products. Learn the factors that go into setting a profitable price.

August 4 – Small Business Tax Requirements. Learn what the tax laws are that determine what you must pay, when to pay your taxes, what records you should keep and how long, when you need an accountant, and how your business taxes relate to your personal taxes.

August 11 – How to Project Sales. How to use your marketing plan to target markets, project sales, budget for promotions, and check the effectiveness of your advertising.

August 25 – The Ultimate Lead Generation System. Learn proven tactics to immediately start increasing your income. This system will help you make more money while working fewer hours.

August 28 – Start Your Next Business for 30 Cents. Learn how to start a profitable eBay business with an initial budget of only 30 cents. You’ll be guided through the process of setting up a new business.
